Scenic Railroad Great Allegheny Passage Shuttle Service
The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad provides a shuttle service for trail users between Cumberland and Frostburg. The service is available Thursday thru Sunday leaving Cumberland at 11:30 am. Enjoy the train ride up the hill to Frostburg and coast back down 16 miles. 1. Bike the Great Allegheny Passage - 16 miles (easy) $ 25 per person
Bring your bikes or make arrangements for rentals and journey along your 16 mile, downhill ride from Frostburg to Cumberland, MD. Along this route you will travel though small trail town’s ride through The Brush Tunnel, one of the smaller tunnels on the trail. Lunch, bike rentals and guides are additional.
2. Bike the Great Allegheny Passage - 32 miles (moderate) $55 per person
Bring your bikes or make arrangements for rentals and journey along your 32 mile, mostly downhill ride from Meyersdale, PA to Cumberland, MD. Along this route you will travel over the Eastern Continental Divide, though small trail towns, and ride through The Big Savage Tunnel, the longest tunnel on the trail at 3,294' long. This shuttle consists of the guest and their car going to Cumberland, being dropped off and then taken to Meyersdale. From there they ride down hill to their own car to travel home at their own pace and leisure. Lunch and guides are additional options you may choose.
3. Trains, Plains and Automobiles (our version of Trains, Planes and Automobiles)* $35.00 per person
This is a perfect way to experience some of what Western Maryland has to offer! Start in Cumberland, MD at the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad and load your bike on the Train and let your journey begin. Train ticket will be provided by Rocky Gap Resort. You will travel, west on the steam powered locomotive, through the Narrows, Helmstetter's Curve (a favorite photos spot for train buffs), through the Brush Tunnel, Woodcock Hollow and end your ride at the historic Frostburg Depot where you and your bike de-board. Spend as much time in town as you like and then peddle across the Plain back to Cumberland at your leisure where your Automobile awaits you.

This support will consist of shuttling riders between the trail and nightly lodging, rendezvousing with the group at trail intersections, preparing lunch, "sweep" vehicle during any road sections. At the conclusion of the trip in DC we will provide shuttle back to Ohiopyle.
Staff Persons: Two guides who will operate the Sag Wagon, prepare meal stops, ride portions of the trail to provide on trail assistance and keep the bikes tuned on a daily basis.
Mobile Repair Shop: All necessary parts, including the carrying of spare bicycles.
Food: Breakfast is included, most mornings it will be at your place of lodging. Daily lunch is a menu appropriate for multi-day calorie burning trip. The trip takes place on a rather unique trail system, considered by Conde Naste Magazine to be one of the seventeen most beautiful rail trails in the world. It is a world class ride that is filled with a multitude of natural, cultural and historically significant sites. The initial 125 miles from Pittsburgh to Cumberland, Maryland are located on abandoned railroad bed. The 180 miles from Cumberland to downtown Washington D.C. are located on the towpath of the now defunct C&O Canal. What this means to cyclists is: 315 miles of trail that begins at 850 feet in elevation, climbs over the Allegheny Front of the Appalachian Mountains at 3200 feet in elevation, and terminates at sea level. All of this happens with a maximum grade of 2%.

This 70 mile bike ride starts at the Savage River Lodge. Arrive and get settled into your cabin, enjoy dinner* on the deck and watch the wildlife. Depart the next morning for Ohiopyle. We will send you with a packed lunch and souvenir water bottle. You will pedal your way to the Meyersdale Train Station where we will be waiting to bring you back to the Lodge. Pick up a book and rock on the front porch until dinner*. Pack your car and be ready to say goodbye to all of your new Lodge friends in the morning as we head back to the train station (after we drop your vehicle in Cumberland) and pick up on the trail right where you left off the day before. Enjoy the scenery at a leisurely pace and snack on your packed lunch as you coast down the hill and through the tunnel to Cumberland where your journey ends and your trip home begins.

This adventure is designed so you don't have to worry about the planning logistics of food, luggage moving, shuttle service, or moving your car to the end of the trip once you have completed the entire Great Allegheny Passage. Over a 3 day time frame you will bike 50 miles the first day from Boston to Ohiopyle, 40 miles the second day from Ohiopyle to Meyersdale and 30 miles on the last day from Meyersdale to Cumberland. This special package is offered to guests staying at the Savage River Lodge, with shuttling provided to the trail and back to the lodge each night.
